Mary A. Shannon (Burtkus), a lifelong resident of Canton, passed peacefully in her own home and transitioned into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 9, 2022. She was 92 years old.
Mary will be remembered as a kind and loving woman who loved life and welcomed with open arms those who came into her life and home. She had a heart for those in need and volunteered her time at nursing homes, during Vacation Bible School and Sunday School.
She was an active and longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Brockton, MA and most recently attended Heritage Baptist Church in Norwood, MA when able. She was a faithful and tireless witness for Jesus Christ and shared the Gospel with whomever and wherever she went.
Mary was married to her late husband David L. Shannon for 60 years. She was the proud mother of 15 children, 35 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren along with many nieces & nephews.

Mary’s children include the following: James P. Shannon of Norton, Maureen G. Humphrey of Whitman, Paul J. Shannon of Wareham, Robert E. Shannon of N. Attleboro, Michael G. Shannon of Ohio, John G. Shannon of CA., William H. Shannon of Canton, Mary Kay Melvin of Canton, Christopher M. Shannon of Mansfield, Regina M. Newcomb of Bridgewater, Teresa A. Marino of Bellingham and Matthew P. Shannon of the Republic of Columbia as well as her late sons Thomas P. Shannon, Richard A. “Ricky” Shannon, and David L. “Buddy” Shannon, Jr. Sister of Eve Crossman and Stephen Chappas.
Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Thursday, June 16 from 4-8 pm and Celebration of Life for family and friends of Mary will be held on Friday June 17, 11:00 AM at Faith Baptist Church, 18 Stoughton St. Stoughton, MA. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton.
