John C. "Jack" Balben

Cochituate: John C. “Jack” Balben, 60 died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 15, 2009.
He was born in Waltham on December 28, 1948 the son of the late John W. Balben and Grace L. (Pepper) Balben who both died in 1977.
Jack is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Catherine M. (Ahern) Balben of Cochituate. He was the loving father of Mary Grace Balben; James W. Balben; John T. “J.T” Balben and Kevin G. Balben all of Cochituate.
Jack has been a lifelong resident of Cochituate and graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1966. He received his BA in History in 1975 from Framingham State College. Jack excelled in competitive sports both in high school and during his college years. He played football and baseball for Wayland High School and football, baseball and on the first hockey team at Framingham State College as a goalie. After college Jack played for the Natick Knights, a local semi-pro baseball team and for the Killilea Senior Park Club League in Boston, a semi-pro football team which won a local championship in 1970. He also played on the Pep’s Dukes and the Braves softball leagues through the Wayland Men’s Softball Association. He was a competitive player and loyal to his teammates. For several years, he served as the cemetery foreman for the Town of Wayland Park, Recreation and Cemetery Division. For the past 23 years he has been a Firefighter and EMT with the Town of Sudbury. Jack was devoted to his wife, his children and his friends and was a great supporter of his children’s sports endeavors. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the Bryant Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Route 30), Cochituate.
His funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 10:00 am at St. Ann’s Parish, Route 27, Wayland.
Interment will follow in the Balben family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Cochituate.
