William C. Monbouquette

Former Red Sox pitcher William C. “Monbo” Monbouquette passed away peacefully at the Brigham and Women's Hospital on Sunday January 25th. He was 78.

Born and raised in Medford, he was the son of the late Frederick and Catherine (Field) Monbouquette. Bill played hockey, baseball, football and soccer at Medford High school. As a Hearst All Star he was signed by the Red Sox in 1955 and began in the majors in 1958. He played with the Sox until 1965, when he was traded to the Detroit Tigers. He later played for the Yankees and the San Francisco Giants. He continued to coach and scout until his retirement. Monbo was a four-time All-Star and famously pitched a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox in 1962. A devoted husband and father, Bill loved the outdoors. He actually enjoyed the cold weather and loved hunting and fishing in the wilderness of northern Maine. A member of the Medford Mustangs Hall of Fame and the Red Sox Hall of Fame, Monbo was active in several charities, especially the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Crotchet Mountain Foundation.


The beloved husband of Josephine (Ritchie) Monbouquette, he was a devoted father to Marc Monbouquette and his wife Julianne of Dover Point, NH, Lt.Col. Michel Monbouquette, USMC and his wife Patricia of Kailua, Hawaii, Merric Monbouquette and his wife Darla of New Boston, NH. He was a loving grandfather to Cameron, Matthew and Sophia. The dear brother of Danielle Moreno and her husband David of Medford, Teddy Monbouquette and his wife Kathleen of Natick, Jack Monbouquette and his wife Diane of Brunswick, GA and Catherine Ferguson of Medford and her late husband Joseph and was the brother-in-law of Fred Puorro of Middleton and his late wife Phyllis, Janet O’Neil of Foxboro and her late husband Steve. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Friday January 30th from 4 thru 8 PM and again on Saturday morning at 10 followed by a funeral mass celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant Street, Malden, at 11 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
