Warner Herley “Buster” Hamlett, age 94, of 723 Holland Road, Danville, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Stuart, VA.
Born November 10, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Weldon W. Hamlett and Emma Lou DeHart Hamlett. He lived his entire life on Holland Road and worked for 15 years in Dan River Mills. Mr. Hamlett was also a well known farmer in the Holland Road community. A veteran of the US Army, he was the recipient of three purple hearts, serving in active duty for six years, and was a WWII D-Day Veteran in the Assault Wave on Omaha Beach. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and State Line Baptist Church. On September 17, 1945, he married Estelle Hundley, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters: Judy Williams and her husband Woodrow of Danville; Bethanie Tucker and her husband William of Ocean Isle, NC; Doloris Kiser and her husband Joseph of Floyd, VA; Rhonda Griffin and her husband John of Yanceyville, NC; one son: Timothy Hamlett and his wife Paula of Ruffin, NC; two sisters: Jean Glass of New Jersey and Emma Pillow of Danville; grandchildren: Jody Williams and his wife Lisa of Fairfax, VA; Mark Williams of Christiansburg; Joseph M. Kiser of Roanoke; Benjamin Kiser and his wife Holly of Floyd, VA; Naomi Banks and her husband Jason of Floyd, VA; Anna Hamlett of Ruffin, NC; Kayla Owen and Ashley Griffin, both of Yanceyville, NC; great-grandchildren: Luke Williams, Adam Williams, and Faith Williams, all of Christiansburg, VA; Noah Williams, Joshua Williams, and Abigail Williams, all of Fairfax, VA; Alexis Kiser, Benjamin Levi Kiser, and Josiah Banks, all of Floyd, VA.
He was predeceased by two sisters: Virginia Clifton and Alice Dean Hamlett; four brothers: Weldon Winston Hamlett, Giles Lee Hamlett, David Allen Hamlett, and Jasper C. Hamlett.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Wayne Wallace will be held Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with graveside military rites by the American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard will follow in the Hamlett Family Cemetery on Holland Road. The family will receive friends in the chapel from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service on Sunday. At other times, they will be at the residence, 723 Holland Road, Danville.
