Obituary

Joaquim Sobral, 85, of Fairhaven died Friday February 20, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Christine M. (Mendonca) Sobral.

Born in Hudson, the son of the late Ivo and Ermelinda (Santos) Sobral, he lived in New Bedford before moving to Fairhaven in 1950.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Fairhaven.

Mr. Sobral was formerly employed as a meat cutter for Gaspar's Linguica Company until his retirement in 1987.

Mr. Sobral was an avid baseball fan and was a Boston Red Sox season ticket holder for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons.

Survivors include a son, David Robert Sobral and his wife Tammy of Fairhaven; two brothers, Joseph Sobral of New Bedford and Fernando Sobral of Acushnet; a sister, Albertina Martins of Shrewsbury; three grandsons, Matthew Sobral, Nathan Sobral, and Christopher Sobral; and nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Antone Sobral.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett Tuesday February 24, 2004 at 8:45 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Monday February 23, 2004 from 5-9 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, New Bedford.
