Webster/Marco Island,FL.
Robert W. 'Bob' Harris, 80, of West Wind Drive and Elcam Circle, West in Marco Island, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011 in U.Mass/Memorial Hospital, University Campus, after a long illness.
He leaves behind his wife of almost 56 years, Nancy L. (Anderson) Harris, one son; Robert T. Harris of Webster, and one daughter; Donna Jo Harris of Hyannis, two grandsons; Robert C. Harris and his wife Erin of Sacramento, CA., and David R. Harris of Thompson, CT., and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Merriam Carlson of Holden.
Bob was born in Worcester, son of Thomas W. and Mary (Heller) Harris and moved to Webster in 1955.
Bob was a graduate of Classical High School and Worcester Jr. College and an alumnus of Clark University.
He served in the U.S.Navy during the Korean War.
Bob started out as an afternoon disc jockey at radio station W.E.S.O. and later continued in the insurance business, first, he was with Barmby-Harris Insurance Agency, then a partner in the H.C.Bartlett Insurance Agency.
He was a founding investor of Commerce Insurance and was on the Board of Directors from 1972-2008.
He was a member of the Independant Insurance Agents of Mass.,a former Master Councillor DeMolay in Worcester, a memmber of Athelson Lodge of Masons in Worcester and Webster Lodge of Masons for 50 years.,he was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of National Ski Club Committee for Tournaments and Webster Rotary Club.
Bob enjoyed sailing and boating, especially Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod, the Gulf waters off of Marco Island, and Webster Lake.
He and his wife have lived full time on Marco Island for 23 years,they would have celebrated their 56th Anniversary, September 11th.
Calling Hours will be Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 5 to 8 PM at the Robert J. Miller Funeral Home and Lake Chapel,366 School St.,Webster.
Bob's Funeral will be Friday, September 9, 2011 at 11 AM in the Funeral Home, burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
