HEALY Joseph Leo devoted husband and father, businessman, attorney, and Navy officer, died on September 5, 2011 at the Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley. He was 87.
The founder and president of Add-Men Services, Inc., he was an expert on the administration of employee benefit and pension plans. A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18. He was accepted into the Navy V-12 College Training Program, studying at the University of Richmond and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he earned a degree in commerce in 1946. During the Korean War in 1951, he was recalled to active duty and served in Washington, D.C. on the Psychological Strategy Board which provided strategy and guidance for Cold War covert operations. He remained a reservist in the U. S. Naval Supply Corps for many years, ultimately attaining the rank of Captain in 1972.
Joseph L. Healy was born in Hudson, MA, on February 24, 1924 to James Leo and Elizabeth “Bessie” (Horgan) Healy. He was educated at St. Michael School and Hudson High School. As a teenager, he began working at Toohey's Pharmacy, where he struck up a lifelong friendship with the pharmacy's owner, Matthew F. Toohey. Following his service in the Navy, he began a career in banking at the Old Colony Trust Company in Boston, where he became Assistant Vice President before leaving to start his own business in 1968. He was responsible for overseeing the creation of a system for tracking thousands of automated health and pension records, a concept still in its infancy in the 1960s. He served as president of Add-Men Services until his retirement in 1999. He was a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law, Class of 1951, and was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. He was also an alumnus of the American Bankers Association Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University (1958).
He was a resident of Melrose, MA in the 1950s and 1960s before settling in Wellesley in 1966, where he was a member of St. Paul's Parish for 45 years. Other memberships included the Wellesley Club, the Fleet Reserve Association, and the University of North Carolina Alumni Association. He was an avid history buff and loved to read. Among his friends and family, he was especially known for his unfailing sense of humor.
His beloved wife, Katherine (Philbin) Healy, whom he married in 1952, died in 2009. He is survived by four children, Elizabeth Dube of Plymouth, MA, Katherine E. Healy of Wellesley, Joseph P. Healy and his wife Teresa of Summit, NJ, and Marguerite Benko and her husband Zoltan of Indianapolis, IN; ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was the loving brother of James L. Healy and the late Rita Healy and Mary Corrado. Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rte16) Wellesley on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 9:00 am.
