Obituary

Billy Clay Carter, age 74, of 1520 Peach Orchard Road, Axton, VA, died Friday, September 2, 2011 in the VA Medical Center in Salem. He had been in declining health for the past six months and a patient in the hospital for ten days.

Born October 27, 1936 in Axton, he was the son of the late Sam Kendrick Carter and Lula Herndon Carter. He lived his entire life in Axton and was a US Army Veteran, having served in Germany in 1958. He was employed by Ridgeway Clocks as a machine operator, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters: Tamara Stone of Martinsville, Marcia Miles and Heidi Hodges, both of Oak Level; two step-sons: Danny Motley of Axton and Tony Keen of Martinsville; three grandchildren: Lauren Monday, Victoria Chaney, Dianna Chaney; one nephew: Michael Carter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Elbert J. Carter.

Funeral services officiated by Rev. Gary Robertson will be held Monday, September 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Herndon-Carter Family Cemetery in Axton. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Sunday, September 4, 2011 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. At other times, they will be at the home of his daughter, Marcia Miles, 6882 Oak Level Road, Bassett, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, 132 Joseph Martin Highway, Martinsville, VA 24112.
