Obituary

Doherty, John E. M.D. of Walpole, formerly of Needham, August 30, 2011. Beloved Husband of Mary Patricia Doherty for 58 years. Devoted father of John E. Jr. of Suffolk VA, Patricia of Mansfield, Robert and Kathleen of Walpole, Kevin and Christopher of Needham, Mary Ellen of North Attleboro, Michael of Newton, Nancy Seeley of Sandwich, Eileen of Westwood, Maura Melia of Millis, and the late Jean Elizabeth Doherty. Papa to 28 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Brother of Rev Robert Doherty S.J. of Weston, and the late Paul Doherty of Quincy.

Born in Dorchester, December 26, 1926. He served in the Naval Air Corps in World War II. He graduated from Boston College in 1949 and Tufts Medical School in 1953. He performed his rotating Internship at St. Elizabeth's Hospital Brighton in 1954 and his residency in general surgery from 1955-1958. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth's Hospital medical staff from 1958-1975. Practiced for 35 years in Needham where he was president of the medical staff at Glover Memorial Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital) from 1958-1993. He was the Team Physician of the Boston Celtics from 1959 to 1969 for their first 9 NBA World Championship titles. He was the medical director of Campion Health Center in Weston for 32 years from 1960-1992. He was the Physician for the Poor Clare Nuns in Jamaica Plain for 25 years. He was the industrial health director at the Laboratory for Electronics (LFE) in Clinton for 38 years from 1958-1996. He was the industrial health director at Analog Devices in Norwood for 14 years from 1982-1996. He was the former medical examiner for the Town of Needham and taught CPR and EMT skills to the Needham Police and Fire Departments staff. He was a member of the Needham Exchange Club.

Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave (Exit 19B off RT 128) Needham, THURSDAY 3-8. Funeral Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond St Walpole, FRIDAY at 10 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment to follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Walpole.
