Garland Crowe DuPree, 89, of Fitzgerald died Friday August 26, 2011 at her residence.
Mrs. DuPree was born in Sylvester on May 4, 1922 to the late Judge and Mrs. William Jewel Crowe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clabe Vernon Dupree, Sr. In 1939 she graduated from Sylvester High School as valedictorian of her class. Later she received an associate degree in secretarial science, a bachelor of science degree in business and a master of education degree from Georgia State College for Women, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
For a number of years, Mrs. Dupree served as chairman of the business department at Worth County High School. Later, she became Professor of Business Administration at Abraham Baldwin College. During this time, she co- authored two legal textbooks that were used in colleges and universities throughout the United States.
During her career, Mrs. Dupree received numerous awards. In 1962, she was named The Georgia Business Teacher of the Year. In 1975, she received the Outstanding Service and Dedication to Business Award at Abraham Baldwin College. Mrs. Dupree was named to “Personalities of the South”, “Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans”, and Who’s Who in Business in 1976. She was a member of Pi Omega Pi and Delta Pi Epsilon national academic educational fraternities. Upon her retirement, she was awarded the title, Professor Emeritus.
Mrs. Dupree was a member of the Nathaniel Abney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as Regent and Vice Regent for several years. She was a member of the Retired Educators Association and The National Genealogical and Historical Societies. It was during this time that she authored two family histories, People of Purpose, Volumes One and Two.
Survivors include: daughter, Dawn Dupree (Danny) Stone of Fitzgerald; son, Clabe V. Dupree, Jr. of Fitzgerald; brother, Dr. Norman J. Crowe of Sylvester; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM Monday August 29, 2011 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Sylvester. The Eulogy will be given by Mrs. Dupree’s daughter, Dawn Dupree Stone. The closing prayer, Psalm 23, will be given by her son, Clabe V. Dupree, Jr.
Pallbearers are grandsons, Daniel V. Stone of Richmond Hill, Jason Dupree and Brian Dupree both of Sylvester, Christopher Costello, J. D., of Lake City, FL., nephews, Norman J. Crowe, Jr., J. D., and Dr. James Edward Crowe both of Sylvester.
Honorary Pallbearers are, Rufus Edward Gandy, George Ray Houston, John Edward Houston III, James Houston and Jay Crowe, J. D.
The family received friends on Monday from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Banks Funeral Home, Sylvester, GA.
