GLOUCESTER: Lawrence E. “Larry” Sargent, 86, died Thursday evening, August 25, 2011 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following an extended illness. He was the husband of Marion M. (Joseph) Sargent.
Born in Gloucester on March 2, 1925, he was the son of the late Everett Sargent and Esther (Horton) Kincade. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduate of the Gloucester High School.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the South-East Asian Theatre in India and Burma. He was honorably discharged in February 1946. He was a longtime member of the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion.
Following his return from the war, he entered the Boston Radio & Television School and graduated in 1947.
Larry was employed as a researcher at MIT/Lincoln Labs, for thirty-six years, having retired in 1992.
He had been a member of the Civil Defense Communications since the late 1960’s. He was also an avid amateur radio operator and was instrumental in forming the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association. As a member of the Civil Defense, he taught classes and licensed many amateur radio operators. At the age of sixty-two, he accomplished a lifelong ambition and earned his pilot’s license.
In addition to his wife of sixty-four years, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Sargent, two granddaughters, Jaime, wife of Jeffrey Prevatte and Julie Carroll; three great-grandchildren, Timothy Robert Carroll, Adrianna Susan Carroll and Jacob Taylor Prevatte; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Susan Jane Sargent, an infant son, John Sargent, and his stepmother, Delia Sargent.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 31st in the Calvary Cemetery at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
