Gilbert L. “Teenie” Salley, 76, a lifelong resident of Norton, passed away in the comfort of his home on Saturday August 20, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Ola J. (Simkins) Salley, to whom he was wed on November 26, 1964.
Born in Norton, MA on May 22, 1935, he was a son of the late Charles N., Sr. and Myra ( Limpus) Salley.
“Teenie” grew up in Norton, was educated in Norton public schools, and was a graduate of the Bristol County Agricultural School. From June 30, 1957 - December 18, 1957, he proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private Second Class.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Salley was a self-employed excavator and was the owner of the Salley Trucking Co. in Norton. He had formerly been employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Norton, and also worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Throughout his life he was an avid farmer.
When younger “Teenie” enjoyed partaking in clam boils and camping with friends. After marrying his wife, he treasured the life of being a husband and father, and in later years, cherished the times spent with his grandchildren.
In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 47 years, he is survived by his devoted children Lynne M. Fraatz and her husband Jon of Norton, Tina J. Askew and her husband Chris of Norton, Catherine A. Donahue and her husband Tom of Norton, Elizabeth A. McDougall and her husband Joe of North Carolina and Scott Salley and his fiancé Susan Kelly of Norton. The brother of Charles N. Salley, Jr. of Norton and the late William A. Salley, Barbara J. LaRosee and Carol- Ann Salley, he is also survived by his loving grandchildren Krista, Joey and Clayton McDougall, Megan and Devin Askew, Samantha and Scott Fraatz, Ava and Patrick Salley and Thomas Donahue, his great grandson Jayden McDougall and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday August 23rd from 9:00- 11:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will follow the visitation in the Timothy Plain Cemetery, Norton.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Salley’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Community Visiting Nurse Agency- Hospice Care, 10 Emory St. Attleboro, MA 02703.
