Obituary

John J. Sullivan, Jr. of East Walpole died August 19 in the Epoch Center in Sharon. He was the husband of Joan E. (Steele) Sullivan.
Born in Dorchester, May 25, 1931, the son of the late John J. and Catherine (Larkin) Sullivan, Mr. Sullivan was raised in Roslindale and had lived in Needham for many years prior to moving to East Walpole 25 years ago.
Mr. Sullivan was a graduate of Roslindale High School and Boston University.
Mr. Sullivan had been a mechanical engineer for Spears Associates of Norwood for 20 years before retiring.
He had also worked for the Pratt and Whitney Corporation, Picard and Burns Corporation and had been the manager of the Mr. Wizard Science Center in Wellesley and also the manager of the Gift Store at the Boston Museum of Science.
Mr. Sullivan had established at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton a program where the children could operate model boats by remote control.
He had been a member of the Minuteman Model Yacht Club.
Mr. Sullivan enjoyed photography, sailing, making model airplanes and rockets and swimming.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In addition to his wife, he is survived b his daughters, Patricia A. Sullivan of Nahant and Lorraine M. Hirsch and her husband Frederick of Melrose.
He is also survived by his siblings, Louise Hoar of Quincy, Paul Sullivan of Wareham, Joanne Hughes of Huntingdon, TN, Margaret Blair of Foxboro, Daniel Sullivan of N. Easton and the late Dorothy Sullivan and Rita Lazzaro.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Gregory Hirsch.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 23 from the Ginley Funeral Home 892 Main St. in Walpole at 8:15 followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 9:00 a.m.
Private burial services will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Massachusetts Hospital School, 3 Randolph St., Canton, MA 02021.
