Obituary

BOWEN, Arthur C.- Of Chelsea, August 9th. Devoted son of the late Arthur and Eva (Fredericks). Beloved brother of the late Nancy Belmonte, Grace Belmonte, Irma Davis, Gladys Burns and Josephine Bowen. Lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service in The First Congregational Church, 26 County Road, Chelsea on Monday, August 15th at 10 AM. Visiting Hours in the Smith Funeral Home, 125 Washington Avenue, CHELSEA on Sunday from 1-4 PM. Services will conclude with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Expressions of sympathy in Arthurs name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
Born in Revere and a graduate of Revere High School, Arthur, at 81 years of age, passed away at the Masconomet Healthcare in Topsfield after a long illness. For over 20 years, until his retirement in the late 80's, Arthur worked as a respiratory therapist at the Chelsea Soldiers Home. Arthur came to Chelsea over 55 years ago through his volunteer work with the Salvation Army and studied Theology at Gordon College in Wenham.
Some of Arthur's greatest memories include playing the organ for the famed evangelist Billy Graham and being invited to Athens, Greece by the Prince of the country who said to Arthur, "I love you like a son." Arthur served the United States as an active member of the United States Army during the Korean conflict where he graduated from Chaplain School in New Rochelle, NY and then became a teacher to many of the children of other service men and women.
Arthur served the community of Chelsea through his various volunteer roles with the Soldiers Home, Salvation Army, the Chelsea Senior Center, Chelsea Community Connections Coalition, the Soup Kitchen, National Night Out, the Chelsea Collaborative, Green Space and many other local groups. Arthur was a delegate to the All-America City Competition in 1998 and served six years as a Chelsea School Committee member.
