Obituary

SAGAMORE BEACH, CAPE COD – Thomas L. Sykes, 79, of Sagamore Beach died Saturday, February 14, 2004 at home with his family by his side after a long illness. He was the husband of Blanche C. (Allen) Sykes.

Born and raised in Somerset, son of the late Joseph W. and Alice (Lawton) Sykes he had lived in Dartmouth for many years prior to moving to Sagamore Beach, Cape Cod where he has resided for the past 47 years.

He was formerly employed as a manager for Pyrofax Gas Plant of Sandwich until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Sykes was a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Iowa that transported President Franklin D. Roosevelt during wartime. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal and the American Theatre Medal for his military service.

He was an avid fisherman on the Cape Cod Canal who loved to spend time with his family. He had also been a part owner of a greyhound kennel.

In addition to his wife of 56 years he is survived by 2 sons: Timothy A. Sykes of Texas and Jeffrey T. Sykes of Sagamore Beach, Cape Cod; 1 daughter: Kathleen H. Culberson of Texas; 1 aunt: Lois Cross of Brandon, Fla; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandsons; several nieces and nephews.

Services to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be Thursday, February 19, 2004 at 12:00 P.M. at the POTTER FUNERAL HOME, 81 Reed Rd., Westport.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Davis Cemetery, Dartmouth.
