Joseph W. Paiva, 85, of Mansfield, passed away on Thursday August 4, 2011 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare Center in Norton. He was the beloved husband of Doris Y.” Dot” (Yerbury) Paiva, to whom he was wed on November 10, 1973.
Born in West Bridgewater, MA on May 23,1926, he was a son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Wardwell) Paiva.
Joe grew up and was educated in Foxboro, and was a graduate of Foxboro High School. During WW II he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Prior to being honorably discharged, he was an Air Traffic Controller stationed at Hickam Field in Hawaii.
Mr. Paiva was a retired self-employed plumber and heating specialist and before branching out on his own, had worked for various plumbing and heating firms in the area.
An active member for over 60 years of the Mansfield Congregational Church, he was a former chairman of the Deacons, Trustees and Music Committees, and was a member of the church choir, served as a church sexton and as a church consultant. He was also a volunteer at Our Daily Bread in Mansfield and at the Mansfield First Baptist Church soup kitchen.
A resident of Mansfield for most of his life, Joe was active with veterans affairs and when younger, was active with the Mansfield Little League.
He loved spending time with his adoring family and one of his greatest passions in life was playing the trumpet. Joe was an avid New England sports fan and also enjoyed cooking for family and friends, camping and fishing.
In addition to his beloved wife of over 37 years, he is survived by his devoted children: Donald L. Paiva and his wife Pauline of Mansfield, Meredith J. Jones and her husband Dana of Conway, NH, Linda J. Kincaid of Mansfield, William J. Paiva, Sr. and his wife Tracy of Eaton, NH, Carol Collins and Janet Woodcock of Martha’s Vineyard, Joyce Collins and her husband Eric Whitman of Martha’s Vineyard and Shirley Collins and her husband David Fukushima of Vermont. He was the brother of Marjorie Treichler of Pennsylvania and is also survived by his cherished 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Paiva was predeceased by 4 sisters, 2 brothers, 2 granddaughters, 1 great -great granddaughter and his former wife Joyce E. Buckley.
Memorial services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday August 11th at 11:00 A.M. at the Mansfield Congregational Church, 17 West St., Mansfield. Private burial with military honors will be held at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Visiting hours have been and omitted and those wishing may remember Mr. Paiva with a donation in his memory made to Our Daily Bread, 15 West St., Mansfield, MA 02048.
