
SALISBURY: Florence (Souza) McGillivary, 81, died Monday, August 1, 2011 in the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport following a brief illness.
Born in Provincetown on August 27, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Souza. Florence was raised in Provincetown and as a young woman she moved to Gloucester, where she raised her family. She has resided in Salisbury for over thirty years.
While living in Gloucester she owned and operated “The Wreck” antique shop for many years. Florence was an artist who especially enjoyed painting seascapes. She was also an avid dancer and loved music. She was dancing as recently as two weeks ago when she went to visit her son in Colorado. Many people will remember her for being the “life of the party.” Florence was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She relished the time she spent with her family and friends over the years. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Marie and her husband, Stanley Zanis of Sanford, ME, Chet and his wife, Dolores Plaiss of Cincinnati, OH, Valerie McGillivray and her husband, Kevin Gomes of Haverhill, Robert E. McGillvray, II of Groveland, Cynthia Eaton of Amesbury and Christopher and his wife, Jeannie McGillivary of Grand Junction, CO; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Michael McKay of Sanford, ME; three sisters, Mary “Libby” Alexander of Gloucester, Diane Hines of Gloucester and Cecilia Cugini of Newton; one brother, Kenneth Souza of Homosassa, FL and her former husband, Robert E. McGillivray of Gloucester and many nieces and nephew. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Bernadette McKay, a sister, Agnes Innis and a brother, Frances “Babe” Souza.
Her funeral Mass will be held on Friday in the St. James Church, 161 Winter St., Haverhill at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held prior to the Mass in the Linnehan-Grondin Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Avenue, Haverhill, from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472. Interment will be private.
