TEWKSBURY - William D. McMahon, age 85, died Friday, July 29, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, surrounded by his loving family, after a long period of declining health. He was the husband of Tomoko (Ogata) McMahon. In his later years, he was cared for by his beloved granddaughter, Christina Camara of Tewksbury.
He was born in West Newton, MA on October 14, 1925, a son of the late, Eugene and Edith (O'Connor) McMahon. He was raised in West Newton before enlisting into the U.S. Navy during WWII. Upon honorable discharge, he re-enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corp., which became the U.S. Air Force, and served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He completed twenty years of military service as a Master Sergeant. After his military career ended, he joined the United States Postal Service, and worked as a letter carrier in Newton. He was a member of the VFW of Bedford, MA, an avid reader, and a loving father. He moved to Tewksbury in 1967.
Besides his wife, Tomoko, he is survived by four children and their spouses; Carol Ann Reardon and her husband Robert of Nashua, NH, Mary Francis Lawrence and her husband Richard of Lowell, John Francis McMahon and his wife Ruth (Winchester) of Hampton, NH, Patrick W. McMahon and his fiance Susan Melanson of Lowell, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, a sister, Joan Benoit of West Newton and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late, George McMahon, Lawrence McMahon, John McMahon, Francis McMahon, Frank McMahon and Marion McMahon.
Friends were received on Monday, August 1, followed by his Funeral Service in the Tewksbury Funeral Home. Committal services were held privately at the National Cemetery in Bourne, Cape Cod. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Merrimack Valley VNA/Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Bldg 9, Lawrence, MA 01843, are appreciated.
