Obituary

Plymouth- Edward R. McCarthy, 84, formerly of Norwell, Green Harbor and Whitman died Wednesday July 27th surrounded by his family at his home. He was the beloved husband for 55 years to the late Louise (Pegnam) McCarthy.

He was born in Brockton brought up in Whitman and has been a resident of Plymouth for the last 17 years. He was the son of the late William F. and Julia M. (O’Brien) McCarthy. Ed was a graduate of Whitman High and The College of the Holy Cross where he earned a business degree and played football.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, during WWII.

Ed was the co-owner and manager of McCarthy Brothers Ice Cream in Whitman until retiring in 1993.

He was an avid golfer and a football fan.

He is survived by his children, Carol (McCarthy) Maguire of Duxbury, Margaret (McCarthy) Bonitatibus of Whitman and John P. McCarthy of Scituate, his nieces and nephews, William, Richard, Frank and Paul McCarthy and Christina Doran, Ann Joyce and Julie Ferguson: also several grandchildren and many grand nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Michael J. McCarthy and Clare (McCarthy) Fenton, brother of the late William and Thomas McCarthy, Sister Viterbo McCarthy, S.J. and Sister Margaret William McCarthy S.J. .

His funeral services will be held on Saturday July 30th at 8:15AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will be in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held on Friday July 29th from 3:00-8:00PM
