Mr. Eugene E. “Gene” Heinig, of Raynham, died Sunday, July 24 in Morton Hospital following a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late M. Louise (McRae) Heinig. He was born 89 years ago in Taunton, the son of the late Arthur E. and Julia (Steinka) Heinig. He was educated in Taunton and had been a lifelong area resident. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a Security Guard at Foxboro State Hospital for 30 years. He was previously employed at the former First National Supermarket in Taunton for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre, where he participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, and campaigns in Northern France and the Rhineland. Gene was awarded 5 campaign ribbons, including one for his participation in “The Battle of the Bulge.” Mr. Heinig enjoyed gardening, participating in the Boy Scouts, and was an animal rights activist.
He leaves numerous nieces and nephews. Closest to him were Mary Lou Hyland of Norton, Virginia Young of Taunton, Jacqueline Smith of Taunton, and Paul Heinig of Middleboro. He was the beloved great uncle of Christopher Young of Ellicott City, Maryland, and Stephanie Turnipseed of Napa, California.
Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home of Taunton.
