METHUEN – Sr. Germaine Demers, 61 passed away on Sunday July 24, 2011 at the St. Claire Residence at the Presentation of Mary after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on November 7, 1949 in Westbrook, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Blanche (Rousseau) Demers. She was educated in Westbrook, Maine and in 1967 entered the Presentation of Mary Novitiate in Hudson, NH and pronounced her first vows on August 16, 1970 in Methuen, MA.
She attended Rivier College in Nashua, NH where she received her B.A. in mathematics, magna cum laude in 1976. She received her M.A. in religious studies from Providence College, RI in 1985. During her 41 years of religious life, Sr. Germaine taught in several of our schools in Maine and Massachusetts. From 1983 – 1988 she was assistant to the novice director; from 1988 – 2000 assistant to the provincial superior; and from 2002 to the present she served as provincial treasurer.
For the last twenty years Sr. Germaine served lovingly and gracefully on retreat and cursillo teams at St. Basil’s Salvatorian Center. Since 1988 she grave talks and offered one on one spiritual direction on Christian Women’s and Men’s yearly retreats. In 1999 Sr. Germaine began her involvement in the Cursillo movement at St. Basil’s and served as Spiritual Director for 10 years on Cursillo weekends. She will be dearly missed by all those persons whose lives she touched and there are many.
She is survived by her sister, Marcia LeDuc and her husband Eugene, her brother-in-law, Stephen Gagnon and his wife Ellen, one nephew Eric LeDuc and his wife Lisa.
Three nieces, Sarah Kravchuk, Julie Erikson, and Nicole Gagnon. She also leaves three grand-nephews.
Besides her parent she was pre-deceased by her sister Theresa.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 2:00p.m. – 4:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. at the St. Claire Residence of the Presentation of Mary 209 Lawrence St. Methuen, MA 01844. Sr. Germaine’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 2:30p.m. in the Chapel of the Presentation of Mary with burial to follow in the Presentation of Mary Cemetery.
