Emily Ann Groover Purvis, 83, of Ocilla, Georgia died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 22, 2011, at the Ocilla Baptist Church with the Rev. Rob Dowdle officiating. Interment will follow in Brushy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 Thursday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mrs. Purvis was born June 16, 1928 in Chattanooga, TN to the late Winston L. “Wink” and Juanita Williams Groover. She was a 1944 graduate of Douglas High School and attended Mercer University. Mrs. Purvis was a former resident of Miami, FL, Douglas and Ocilla, before moving back to Ocilla in 1946. She helped organize the Girl Scout program in Irwin County and was a Girl Scout leader in the 1960’s. Mrs. Purvis was retired office manager of the Irwin County Stock Yard. She was a member of the Ocilla Baptist Church, the Martha Sunday School Class, and a member of the WMU. She was an original member of the Ocilla Sewing Club.
Mrs. Purvis is survived by her daughter, Jan Purvis Dorminy and husband, A.B.C. “Chip”, III of Irwin County; son, L. Lamar Purvis, Jr., and wife, Tammi of Ocilla; grandchildren: Heather Dorminy Poe and husband, Preston and A.B.C. “Art” Dorminy, IV and wife, LeAnne, all of Irwin County, Valerie Purvis Veal and Husband, Kyle of Atlanta and Loren L. Purvis, III of Ocilla; great grandchildren: Davis Hames, A.B.C. “Bradford” Dorminy, Mitchell Dorminy, Abigail Poe and Wyatt Poe. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loren L. Purvis and a brother, W.L. “Wink” Groover, Jr.
