Obituary

SALEM … Dorothy (Lomer) Lane, 92, of Swampscott, Massachusetts died July 17, 2011 at Salem Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Katherine (Popkowski) Lomer. Raised in Saugus, she was a graduate of St. Mary’s Girls’ High School in 1936 where she was class salutatorian. She also graduated from Simmons College in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. After holding a number of supervisory and teaching positions at Boston Lying In Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital), Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and Lynn Hospital, she assisted her husband, the late Stanley L. Lane, in his accounting practice. When not working with her husband, she was Past President of the North Shore Simmons College Club, a member of Junior Aid Society, member of the Boston Council of International Visitors, a member of the Sodality at St. John the Evangelist Church, Charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, member of the Peabody Essex Museum and Chairman of various charity drives. A Charter member of the Homemaker Home Health Service of the North Shore, she was also Director and Secretary of All Care Visiting Nurses and Hospice, member of the President’s Advisory Committee of Bentley College, donor of the Stanley L. and Dorothy L. Lane Scholarship Fund at Bentley College and member and Vice President of the Salem Hospital Aid. She was also founder and co-chairman of the first Salem Hospital Golf Tournament and a member of Tedesco Country Club for 51 years, where she was Chairman of the Nine Hole Golfers for many years.

Other than her family and volunteer activities, her passion was travel, especially cruising where she was proud that she had toured the world and had only missed Antarctica.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son in law, Sandra-Claire Cross and David L. Cross of Marblehead, grandchildren Jeffrey A. Cross of Marblehead, Lauren E. and Michael J. Calabrese of Framingham, Timothy L. Cross and Hascy A. Cross of Weatogue, Connecticut, great granddaughter Laney A. Cross of Weatogue, her special nieces Kathleen E. Cabral of Somerset, MA and special friend, Kelly LeBlanc. She was the sister of the late Evelyn (Lomer) Szulewski of Fall River, MA. Dorothy was looking forward to the birth of her great grandson, due in December.

Arrangements: Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 21 from 8-10AM at the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN & RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean Street, Lynn, Massachusetts followed by a funeral mass at 11AM at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Burial will be at the Swampscott Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Care Visiting Nurses and Hospice, 16 City Hall Square, Lynn Massachusetts 01901.
