Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Richard T. “Dick” Goulter, 81, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, July 17, 2011 at Radius Health Care Center in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Mary M. “Lou” (Sullivan)Goulter for 60 wonderful years. Dick and Lou have spent the past 19 years retired in Stuart, Florida, recently returning to Gloucester due to his illness.
Born in Boston on June 4, 1930, he was the son of late Eugene H. and Jennie E. (Tyner) Goulter. He graduated from Boston College High School in 1947.
Dick began his 45 year career in the jewelry industry after high school working at the Jeweler’s Building in Boston. In 1957, he moved his young family to Gloucester beginning a new life to work at W.E. Blanchard, Jeweler. He managed the store for 27 years before purchasing the business in 1984. He retired in 1992 and for four years traveled all over the continental United States and Canada by R.V. with his devoted wife.
The passion of his life was his wife, his family and his dogs. He enjoyed spending his time watching his family grow over the years. Dick was a dedicated Catholic. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892. He was a member of the MASS/RI Jewelers Associations, Jewelers of America and the elite Diamond Peacock Jewelers Club of Boston. He was an avid golfer and member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club. He was also a member of the Gloucester Power Squadron for many years.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his three adoring children, Linda O’Maley and her husband Robert of Gloucester, Richard Goulter and his wife Julie of Topsfield, and Mary Lou Balbo and her husband Daniel of Gloucester. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Kathleen McKinnon and her husband James, Meghan Keith and her husband Daniel, Timothy Goulter, Deanna Benjamin and her husband Robb, Daniel Balbo, Jr. and Bradley Goulter and two beautiful great-granddaughters Riley Marie McKinnon and Avery Faith Benjamin. He will be sadly missed by all.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at St. Anthony-by-the-Sea, Farrington Avenue, East Gloucester at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education & Research for Dementia (MFMER) at 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32244.
