Robert H. Gale, Sr. age 90 of Bridgewater, formerly of Brockton died Saturday July 9, 2011 peacefully surrounded by his wife, sons and granddaughters at the Signature Healthcare/Brockton Hospital after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband for 65 years of Dorothy D. (Cappiello) Gale. Bob was born in Rockland and raised in Brockton a son of the late Alfred B. and Catherine (Creeden) Gale. He was a longtime resident of Ward 4 “the Bush” in Brockton before moving to Bridgewater eleven years ago.
During WW II Bob served in the US Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre and participated in the battle of Iwo Jima. He had worked for many years in the US Post Office in Brockton and retired as a district supervisor. In his free time he enjoyed golf and was a member at DW Field Golf Course and also bowling with the Brockton Senior Citizens League. Bob was an original member of the Enterprise Club where he enjoyed playing 45 and was also a member of The Marine Corps League, Brockton ITAM, Whitman VFW Post 697, the Sons of Italy, the Postal Supervisors Association and the former Irelands Own.
Bob will be remembered as an easy going man who was a friend to all and would always speak his mind. He was proud of his Irish heritage, the City of Brockton and the US Marine Corps. Most of all he was proud of his family; the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons Robert H. Gale, Jr. of Brockton; John M. Gale and his wife Elaine of Bridgewater and Timothy J. Gale of Brockton. He was the grandfather of Sean Gale, Colleen Robichaud, Katelyn, Erin, Veronica and Peter Gale and great grandfather of PFC Richard Robichaud, USMC, Brooke, Abby, Gwen, Kincaid and Alexander.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday 3-7 pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Thursday at 8 am. Funeral Mass In Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9 am. Burial with military honors in Calvary Cemetery.
