Obituary

James Carroll Hankins, age 72, of 1689 Plantation Drive, Axton, Virginia, died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past five years.

Born June 28, 1939 in Danville, he was the son of the late James Campbell Hankins and Virgie Jones Hankins. He lived in the Axton community for the past 25 years and retired on disability after working as a welder at Jarrett Welding. Mr. Hankins was a veteran of the US Army and later served in the National Guard. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jayne Craddock Hankins of the home; two sons: Jeffrey Hankins and Steve Ray Hankins, both of Axton; two daughters: Bobett Jordan and Cindy Walker, both of Danville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother: Billy Hankins of Ringgold; three sisters: Betty Testerman of Danville, Barbara Stallans of Serverville, Tennessee, Dorothy Adkins of Blairs; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Hankins and Henry Hankins, and one sister, Ima Mae Dalton.

Graveside funeral services officiated by Rev. William J. Soyars will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Friday, July 8, 2011 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., and at other times, they will be at the residence, 1689 Plantation Drive, Axton, Virginia.
