Obituary

Harry Edward Bennett, 89, of New Bedford died Saturday February 7, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Julia (Ramos) Bennett.

Born in Onondaga, New York, he lived in Boston and New Bedford for most of his life.

Mr. Bennett was formerly employed as a supervisor for the United States Postal Service at the South Annex in Boston until his retirement.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He attended the Downtown New Bedford Senior Center and the Buttonwood Senior Center. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and participated in the Campaigns of Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Tunisia, North Apennines, and Sicily. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Harry E. Bennett, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland, and Rico Ramos of New Bedford; 4 daughters, Janis Harris of Boston, Sandra L. Pace of Brighton, Juliana Smith-Walker of Brockton, and Sandra Gomes of New Bedford; 4 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday February 12, 2004 at 12 Noon in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visitation will be on Thursday morning 11 AM - 12 Noon prior to the service.
