Clinton Frederick Miller, 97, of 186 Jerry Browne Road, died on Wednesday, June 29th, at Avalon Healthcare Center. He was married for 47 years to Elizabeth H. Miller, who died in 1991.
Mr. Miller was born in Berwick, PA, on August 15, 1913, to Elliott and Loretta Miller. He graduated from Berwick High School and Lehigh University where he majored in Chemical Engineering and was a Phi Beta Kappa key holder. After college Mr. Miller worked at the Devoe-Reynolds Paint Co. in Boston and Brooklyn, NY and entered law school as a night student at Fordham University. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania law school in 1940 and joined Hercules, Inc in Wilmington, DE as a patent attorney the same year. He supervised plant openings in Radford, VA and Chattanooga, TN, returning to the home office in 1944. He retired from Hercules as chief patent counsel in 1977.
Mr. Miller was a member of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, the Delaware Bar Association and the bars of the District Court and Court of Customs and Patent Appeals in Washington, DC. He was a member and president of the Wilmington Jaycees. He served on the vestries of St. Andrew’s and Trinity Episcopal churches in Wilmington. Mr Miller was active in Delaware’s political community. In retirement he served for 8 years on the Governor’s Council on Aging. He helped create and promulgate legislation benefiting the elderly and counseled seniors as part of the ElderInfo program. He was passionate about these causes, believing that seniors should be better served by the social system.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Dr. Clinton F. and Laurel Miller of Portsmouth, NH and Penelope E. Miller and Victor Sitty of Mystic. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Adele E. Wick, of Greenland, NH and 4 grandchildren - Douglas, Patrick, Charlie and Elizabeth Miller. He was predeceased by a sister, Eloise McLaughlin, and 2 nephews.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Barbara Watrous and the staff at Avalon Healthcare Center who cared for Mr. Miller during his illness. A private memorial service is being planned.
