Sherman Lee Greer, age 90, died on June 29, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS. He was born on September 8, 1920 to the late Ezra L. and Annie Ray Greer of Tallahatchie County, MS. Sherman was a Sargent in the United States Army where he served in the 2nd Battalion, 155th Infantry in New Guinea, located in the southern Philippines. He received the American Defense Service Medal, the APTO Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star. Mr. Greer was one of the boys in the CC camps and worked in the building industry as a contractor. He also owned and operated a gas station in Water Valley, MS for 20 years. He was a Mason and a member of the VFW. Sherman was a true outdoorsman. He loved to fish and knew every fishing hole in Yalobusha County, Tennessee and Arkansas. He also enjoyed deer hunting. He loved his children and grandchildren. His favorite holiday was the 4th of July and he would always make sure there were plenty of fireworks for him and his grandchildren to enjoy.
Visitation for Mr. Greer will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Seven Oaks. Internment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley, MS.
He is survived by two daughters, Polly A. Hoskins of Hickory Flat, MS and Brenda Fellinger (Bob) of Park City, Utah; five sons, Harold L. Greer (Donna) of Hernando, MS, Billy W. Greer (Patricia) of Memphis, TN, William Albert Greer of Water Valley, MS, Sherman L. Greer, Jr. (Linda) of Como, MS and Roger D. Greer (Raelene) of Water Valley, MS; twenty nine grandchildren, sixty nine great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.
Mr. Greer was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Anderson Greer; a son, James Robert Greer; four sisters, Mae Brooks, Ella Baker, Julia Greer and Thelma Greer; and four brothers, Clifton Greer, Carlton Greer, Tommy Greer and Sheldon Greer.
