Obituary

James Robert “Jimmy” Chalker, 76, of Hoover, Alabama, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011.

Graveside services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery at 1 P.M. on Saturday, July 2, 2011, with the Rev. B.J. Funk officiating.

A native of Carrollton, Georgia, Mr. Chalker was born to the late Mr. & Mrs. F.M. Chalker. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his college years, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Marching Band. After college, he graduated from the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and served on the U.S.S. Kretchmer. He was later employed by the Alabama Power Company, where he worked until his retirement. As an active, long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, he volunteered with the Men’s Club and children’s ministries (where he was known as “Mr. Jim”) and made many loving and faithful friends. He was an enthusiastic world traveler and visited every continent at least once.

He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Chalker; sons, Jerry Shore and Joseph Shore; brother, Michael Chalker; nieces, Lori Medlock Anderson and Marianne Medlock Thompson; nephew, John Chalker Medlock and his grandchildren, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Harold (Frances Chalker) Medlock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Church, 518 19th St. N., Birmingham, AL 35203, on behalf of the Men’s Club or the children’s ministry.
