Frank Costa III, 70, of New Bedford died Sunday June 19, 2011 at home. He was the companion of Grace Herbert.
Born in Fairhaven, the son of the late Rose (Correia) and Frank Costa, Jr., he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Costa was formerly employed as a firefighter for the city of New Bedford for 23 years until his retirement.
He was a member of Firefighters Union Local 841, the Retired Firefighters of New Bedford, and the Firefighters Golf League. He was an avid golfer and New England Patriots fan.
Survivors include his companion; three children, Kevin, Karen and Kelly; two brothers, Dennis Costa and his wife Elaine, and Robert Costa and his wife Theresa, all of New Bedford; a sister, Patricia Pike and her husband Arthur of Florida; two nieces, Elizabeth Pettit of Providence, RI and Cathie Costa of New Bedford; two nephews, Joseph Costa of Westport and Robert Costa, Jr. of New Bedford; several great-nieces and great-nephews; his companion's sons, Ronald Herbert of Maine, John Herbert and his wife Bernice, and Michael Herbert and his companion Virginia Sherman, all of New Bedford; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
