AUBURN-Jack Barsum, 71, of 18 Westwood Drive, formerly of Somerset Street, Worcester died Wednesday, February 4th in Hermitage Nursing Home. He leaves his wife of 29 years, Karen H. (Girard) Barsum, his son Daniel E. Barsum of Auburn, 3 brothers, Peter and his wife Rose Barsoum of Shrewsbury, George and his wife Mildred Barsoum of Northborough and Ephraim Barsoum of Worcester, a sister Margaret wife of Eugene Colwell of Sturbridge, his sister-in-law Beatrice Barsoum of Alexandria, VA, and many nephews and nieces. A brother Elias Barsoum predeceased him.
He was born in Central Falls, RI the son of the Very Reverend Peter and Katherine (Hanna) Barsoum. His father had been pastor of St. Mary’s Assyrian Apostolic Church on Hawley Street for 35 years. Mr. Barsum had been a teacher in Worcester and Longmeadow, and last worked as Assistant Clerk Magistrate for Worcester Central District Court until his retirement. He was a graduate of Worcester State College, Boston University and Suffolk University. Mr. Barsum was a member of St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church, and a former member of Main South Post 341 American Legion and the Worcester Lodge of Elks. He was an avid writer and had been working on his book, “Three Decker Society” which he had hoped to have published.
The funeral is Monday, February 9th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a service at 11:00 AM in St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church, 1 Industrial Park, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Sunday, February 8th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
