Obituary

Esther Stein Harris, 85, of Ocilla, Georgia died Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Coliseum Northside Hospital in Macon. She had lived in Macon for the past five years.


Graveside services will be held June 16, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation Cemetery in Evergreen Cemetery, Fitzgerald, Georgia. The family will receive friends after the service at the Harris home, 800 S. Irwin Ave., Ocilla, Georgia.


Mrs. Harris was born September 21, 1925 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was raised in Cartersville, Georgia by her parents Sam and Anne Cohen Stein. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. Degree in Secretarial Science. In 1947, Esther married the love of her life, Charles A. Harris, and moved to Ocilla, Georgia, her home until 2006. She was a devoted wife throughout their fifty-four year marriage until his death in 2001. Esther Harris was small in stature but large in character. She was intelligent, witty, generous, thoughtful and loved by all who had the good fortune to know her. At the age of eighty-one she discovered her hidden artistic talent. For the next four years, she painted and drew pictures that will be cherished by her family and friends for years to come.


She is survived by her three loving daughters, sons-in-law and daughter-in-law: Anita Gouse and her husband Gary of Birmingham, Alabama, Raye Coplin of Atlanta, Georgia, Joan Kent and her husband, David of Macon, Georgia and Suzy Harris Engelhard and her husband Hadley Engelhard of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren: Ilyse Brobst and her husband, Jeff, Stacey Gouse, Brian Coplin, Arden Miller and her husband, Jeff, Elliot Coplin and his wife, Shelley, Lauren, Harris, Steven and Stuart Kent, Adam and Blake Harris Engelhard, and Chase Engelhard; great-grandchildren: Jake and Morgan Miller, Bradyn and Charlee Brobst, and Jaron Coplin. She is also survived by her sisters, Rosalie Kruger and Ruth Wisebram and her husband Herschel, and her brother Ben Stein and his wife, Iris. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Harris and her son, Lee A. Harris.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation or to the charity of your choice.
