GHATTAS, Victor. He passed peacefully at his home in New Milford, NJ on June 9, 2011 after a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer. He was 70.
Loving husband of his devoted wife, Gitta. Dear father of Mary, Dina, Gilda and Sandy. Cherished grandfather of Saleeba and Lydia.
Born and raised in Jerusalem, Ghattas excelled as both a soccer player and coach in his youth, and spent much of his free time hunting in the fields outside the Holy City for quail, pheasant and other fowl. He and his family emigrated in 1967 to Washington, D.C., before settling in New Jersey, where he owned a delicatessen and worked as a union tile contractor. Ghattas' love of the hunt lasted throughout his life, as did his love of cooking. He was both an expert marksman and, according to family and friends, a great cook whose wonderful Sunday meals were the highlight of the weekend.
Friends and family are invited for visitation on Sunday, from 6-9 PM at St. Mark’s Syrian Orthodox Church, 260 Elm Avenue, Teaneck, NJ. A funeral service will begin at 10 AM at St. Mark’s on Monday. Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ.
