TEWKSBURY - Donald R. “Woody” Wood, age 73, a retired manager for Best PetroleumCompany, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, Feb. 2, at Saints Memorial Medical Center, aftersuffering a heart attack at his Carnation Drive residence. He was the husband of Edith M.(McAleavey) Wood, with whom he had celebrated a 48th wedding anniversary this past June 12th.
He was born in Lowell, Mar. 27, 1930, the son of the late Alvin and Dorothy (Blackall) Wood. he was raised in Watertown and Roxbury, but lived the greater part of his life in Tewksbury.
Prior to retirement, he was a manager for Best Petroleum Company’s service stations in thegreater Boston area.After he retired he moved to Bradford, Maine, but returned to be with his family in Tewksburyeight months ago.
He served in the U.S. Army’s occupation forces in Germany between WWII and the Korean War.
He will be best remembered as a devoted Red Sox baseball fan, and a Ford brand automobile man.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Nancy Wood of Lowell, Carol and her husbandPeter Rakowski of Westminster, Donna and her husband Dennis Maffeo and Joanne and herhusband James Kenney all of Tewksbury; two sons, Donald R. Jr. and his wife Anne (Treanor)Wood of Lowell, and John M. Wood of Malden; two sisters, Mildred Moore of Chelsea, MarionWesterhouse of Albany, NY; and seven grandchildren, Peter and Kevin Rakowski, Jessica,Joshua, and Jaclyn Kenney, Joey and Hannah Maffeo.
His funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 6, in the funeral home. Interment was in TewksburyCemetery.
