Bernard Clifton Calvert, age 99, of 12216 Martinsville Highway, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in Riverside Health and Rehab Center.
Born October 31, 1911 in the Brosville Community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late John C. Calvert and Lula Long Calvert. He lived most of his life in the Brosville Community and was a retired mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. His wife, Hope Savage Calvert, predeceased him. Mr. Calvert was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church, a member of The United Methodist Men and a former member of the administrative board and trustee. In addition, he was a charter member of the Brosville Ruritan Club, serving as District Governor, a member of the Brosville Chapter of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, of which he was a State Councilman. He was also a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge; a Charter Member of the Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society where he served as Past President, a member of the Brosville Cascade Friends of the Library, a Past President of the Danville Kennel Club, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include two daughters: Bernice Gammon of the home, Kathryn May and her husband Kenneth of Forest, Virginia; a son-in-law: Randolph “Bud” Dickens; one sister: Anne McDaniel of Cascade; ten grandchildren: Jeff May, Steve May, Larry May, Alleyne Dickens, Sydnee Hawks, Carrole Dickens, Gary Dickens, David Dickens, Greg Gammon, Jill Carrillo; fifteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one daughter, Faye Dickens, and by two brothers, Ernest Calvert and Cecil Calvert, and by two sisters, Edna Corpening and Homey Calvert.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Jeffrey Harlow will be held Friday, June 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Brosville United Methodist Church, with interment following in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence, 12216 Martinsville Highway, Danville.
