Obituary

John Thomas Bowers, Jr. MD, of Duxbury/Scituate formerly of West Roxbury a trusted pediatrician to thousands of children in Greater Boston died at South Shore Hospital on June 5, 2011 following an acute illness. After graduating from Harvard College and Boston University Medical School he took his residency at the Boston City Hospital and served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War. He founded Roslindale Pediatrics in 1952 where he worked for 37 years until his retirement. He was on the staff of the Boston Floating, St. Margaret's, Carney and Faulkner Hospitals. He served as Chief of Pediatrics at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He was a member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, Scituate Country Club and Foxfire Country Club of Naples FL. He was past president of the Boston Floating Hospital Alumni Association and the Irish-American Club of Naples FL.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, William G. Bowers of Needham MA and Bernard G. Bowers of Green Harbor MA.
He was the devoted husband of Pauline A. (Markey) Bowers. Father of John T. Bowers, III, MD of Norfolk VA, Paul M. Bowers of Scituate MA, Kathryn E. Bowers, MD of Concord MA, Patricia E. Bowers of West Bridgewater MA, Julie Bowers Canniff, RN of Roslindale MA. and the late Susan Bowers. He was beloved grandfather of Elizabeth G. Manson of Atlanta GA, Timothy J. Bowers of Boulder CO, Roberto B. LaColla of Brighton MA, Domenico LaColla of West Bridgewater MA, Brittany E. Canniff of New York NY, Drew B. Canniff of Roslindale MA, James W. Terhune of Concord MA, and Maria Elena M. Terhune of Concord MA. He was the proud great-grandfather to Thomas Bowers Manson of Atlanta GA. His greatest source of pride in life was his extended family, including the partners of his children, numerous nieces and nephews, and all of their children.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the staff of the South Shore Hospital for their compassionate care during his final hours.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday June 9, in the Holy Family Church 601 Tremont St Duxbury, MA at 11:00 am.
Interment will be private.
