Reuben Spires, 81, of Barnwell, South Carolina formerly of Fitzgerald, died June 3, 2011 at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2011, in Evergreen Cemetery, Fitzgerald, Ga.
Mr. Spires, was the husband of the late Nina Spinks Spires. Born July 6, 1929, in Fitzgerald, he was a son of the late James and Ruth King Spires. He left school early to join the Navy. He was an electrician, a Mason and a member of Shriners-Omar Temple, Barnwell Jaycees, American Legion Post 246, Barnwell Lions Club and Siloam Methodist Church in Barnwell. He gave time and money to participate in many civic organizations and help people. He loved to spend time outdoors hunting and fishing. Santee was his favorite place to spend time fishing.
Reuben’s friends and family knew him as a hard-working man. He worked two jobs most of his life to provide for his family. He loved joking around with family and friends. He enjoyed being around family.
Surviving are his son, Dr. Robert K. Spires (Cindy Sanders Spires) of Columbia; daughters, Patricia Spires Lott of Barnwell, Susan Spires Vaughn (Timothy L. Vaughn) of Columbia; grandchildren, Michael Lott Jr. (Stephanie Black Lott) of Barnwell, Brana Spires Wallace (R. Scott Wallace), Jayme E. Spires, Christopher B. Vaughn, Caitlin D. Vaughn, Bradley A. Vaughn, all of Columbia; five great-grandchildren, brother James Spires (Sonia Tomberlin Spires), and brother-in-law, Johnny Beck (Frances). He was predeceased by his sister, Naomi Spires Beck, and son-in-law, Michael L.
