Schofield, Andrew Gardner (Andy) 89, husband of Eleanor Ouellette for 34 years, died June 3, 2011 at Charlton Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Fall River on December 18, 1921, he attended Fall River Schools, graduating from B.M.C Durfee High School in 1941. He was proud to have been President of his graduating class at Morton Middle School. He later received a B.S. in Business Administration from Bryant College where he played on the tennis team. He served in the U.S. Army for 3 1/2 years during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of master sergeant. In 1946, he married Barbara Smith, also of Fall River, and began his 50 year career at Smith Office Equipment Company Inc. of Fall River, where he served as president for over 35 years.
His life accomplishments include: two terms on the Board of the Fall River Chamber of Commerce; a member of the First Congregational Church where he served as an elder and on the Prudential committee; a seat on the Board of the Quequechan Club where he was a life member and one time Chair of the House Committee , and a seat on the Board of Directors of the Credit Bureau of Greater Fall River. Andy was a longtime director of the Bank of Fall River, lately serving as Vice Chairman of the Board. For enjoyment he played golf and tennis at the Acoaxet Club and spent many happy days fishing and boating with friends and family. Recently, he continued his devotion to sports from his favorite armchair and enjoyed trips to the Caribbean and restaurant meals preceded by leisurely drives.
In addition to his wife, Eleanor, Andy is survived by two children by his late wife Barbara Smith; Andrew G. Schofield Jr. of Fall River, and Linda S. Schofield of Westport, his sister, Hilda Jean Schofield of Fall River, a cousin, Myrtle Brierly, and eight grandchildren: Seth, Darah, Hannah, Colin and Andrew Schofield and John, Timothy and Susanna Bolger.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Fall River Women's Union, 101 Rock Street, Fall River, MA 02720. Gifts will be used to better the lives of women and children in the greater Fall River area.
Calling hours will be held at the Potter Funeral Home on Monday, June 6, 2011 from 4 to 6.
On Tuesday, June 7, there will be a private interment at Beech Grove Cemetery in Westport for the family.
This will be followed by a memorial service at 10 AM for all of his friends and family at the Acoaxet Chapel on Howland Road in Westport Harbor, MA.
