Mrs. Catherine Smith Mathis, 93, of the Salem Community in Ben Hill County died Wednesday, May 31, 2011, at her daughter’s home in Palmetto, Florida.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Brent Duncan and Rev. Tommy Land officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 Friday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Mathis was born July 26, 1917 in Ben Hill County, Georgia to the late M. Monroe and Lizzie Livingston Smith. She grew up in the Salem community of Ben Hill County and was a former resident of Palmetto, FL. Mrs. Mathis was a former Avon representative and a former employee of Tropicana. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and a member and former secretary of the Fidelis Sunday School.
She is survived by her daughter: Annette Burdick of Palmetto, FL; grandchildren: Mike Burdick of Newtown, CT, Vicki Clark of Alpharetta and Jeff Burdick of Parrish, FL; great grandchildren: April, Colby, Grayson and Bailey and great-great grandchildren: A.J., Cassidy, Noah and Aidan. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Mathis, brother, Avery Smith, sister, Minnie Williamson and a son-in-law, William E. Burdick.
