Barbara J. (Hess) Devine, 72, of Mansfield, passed away surrounded by her loving family, on Monday May 30, 2011 at home. She was the beloved wife of Bernard L. Devine, to whom she was wed on May 5, 1962.
Born in New York City, New York on June 30, 1938, she was a dear daughter of the late William and Jean (Gaydos) Hess.
A resident of Mansfield for the past 47 years, Barbara grew up and was educated in New York, and was a 1956 graduate of John Adams High School in Queens, New York.
Prior to retiring in 2005, Mrs. Devine had worked as a secretary for Kendall Healthcare/Covidien in Mansfield for 15 years. She had previously been employed at the former Mansfield Press in Mansfield.
Barbara was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and was an active member of the Mansfield Council On Aging, and a former member of the Mansfield Band Parents Association.
An avid softball player and bowler, Barbara was a former member of several bowling leagues at North Bowl in North Attleboro and at the former Foxfield Lanes in Foxboro. She had also played on the Attleboro Women’s City Softball League.
Her hobbies included knitting crocheting, photography and traveling. She especially cherished the wonderful times spent in the presence of her family and grandchildren.
In addition to her beloved husband of 49 years., she is survived by her loving daughters Doreen D. Swadel and her husband Richard of North Andover and Deborah L. Arruda and her husband Andrew of Warren, Rhode Island. The devoted sister of Norman Hess of Illinois, Marilyn Rivard of Rhode Island and William Hess of Florida, she is also survived by her adoring grandchildren Jason & Jenna Swadel and Thomas, Daniel and Ryan Arruda, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday June 1st from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield.
Private services and burial will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield. In lieu of flowers, Barbara’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Suite 2, Boston, MA 02115.
