Ms. Shirley Anne Simmons Draughn, age 67, of Mt. Airy, passed away on, Saturday, May 28, 2011 at her home after a courageous battle against cancer. She was born on December 18, 1943 in Surry County to the late John Preston and Martha Etta Tucker Simmons. Ms. Draughn retired from the Surry County School System. She was a devout Christian and loving friend to many, and a member of Mayberry Baptist Church.
Ms. Draughn is survived by her son, Trent Draughn, of Charlotte; her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Scott Shelton, of Pilot Mountain; one brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Claudine Simmons, of Mt. Airy; five grandchildren, Meghan Shelton and Hayley Shelton, of Pilot Mountain, Ali Draughn, Trinity Draughn, and Tyler Draughn, of Charlotte; her ex-husband and friend of 40 years, Garland Draughn, of Mt. Airy; and her loyal and loving dog, Misty. Ms. Draughn was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Rex Simmons; and special aunt, Lockie Needham Patterson, all of Mt. Airy.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday May 31, 2011 at Stoney Creek Primitive Baptist Church at 4:00 P.M. with Reverend Craig Edwards of Mayberry Baptist Church and Chaplain Sharon Snow of Hospice officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on, Monday May 30, 2011 from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. The family will also be receiving friends at Ms. Draughn’s home prior to the services, 219 Preston Ln., Mt. Airy, NC 27030. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice House, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the nurses and caregivers at John Woltz Hospice Home, Mountain Valley Hospice staff, and a special thanks to Heather Jessup for all her kindness and support during Ms. Draughn’s illness.
