Gertrude Chitwood, 94 of Danville died Saturday, May 29, 2011 at Riverside Health and Rehab. Born December 19, 1916 in Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Dosie Simmons. Gertrude was a member of Mountain View Church in Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Eugene Chitwood. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Stone of Danville and Jeanette Smithson of Chatham; one son, Bobby Chitwood of VA Beach; four sisters, Pat York of Florida, Ruth Cufman of Stockbridge Georgia, Geraldine Marcus of Georgia and Betty Thoro of Georgia; one brother, Burch Simmons of Georgia; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one son, William Chitwood; six brothers, Floyd Simmons, Verse Simmons, Nelson Simmons, Bud Simmons, Rubert Simmons and Ernest Simmons; four sisters, Loya, Eloise, Lilly Mae, and Flonie.
Funeral services officiated by Pastor Berry Sossaman will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Betty Stone, 1927 Halifax Road, Apt. 10B, Danville.
