Obituary

William A. “Bill” Murphy, 87, of Whitman, a former supervisor for the Massachusetts Department of Social Welfare, died Thursday May 26th in the St. Joseph Manor, Brockton, after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of Anna M.(Stary) Murphy.

Bill was born and brought up in New York, son of the late William A. and Helen (Cleary) Murphy.

Mr. Murphy has been a resident of Whitman for 39 years.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart.

Mr. Murphy a graduate of New York University was employed by the Massachusetts Department of Social Welfare and also served as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Brockton.

After his retirement he earned the Frank J. Manning Gerontology Certificate from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

He belonged to the Secular Franciscan Order At-One-Ment Blessed Lucius Fraternity for over 50 years. Mr. Murphy was also a member of the Whitman Council on Aging and the St. Vincent dePaul Society.

He is survived by his wife Anna M. (Stary) Murphy of Whitman, his sisters, Sally Morrow of Canada and Margaret Manfredi of Florida and his nieces and nephews.

His visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9:30-10:30AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. His Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery Whitman.
