Gladys (Wood) Collins, 100
Longtime Member of Tewksbury Congregational Church
TEWKSBURY: Gladys (Wood) Collins, age 100, of Billerica, a former longtime resident of Tewksbury, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Life Care Center of the Merrimack Valley in Billerica.
She was the beloved wife of George R. Collins, who passed away on September 6, 1991.
Born in Oldham, England, she was the daughter of the late Walter Wood and Rhoda (Neal) Wood.
Gladys was raised in Lowell and attended Lowell schools.
Following her marriage in 1933, she moved to Tewksbury, where she lived for more than 73 years.
Prior to her retirement in 1974, Gladys worked as a librarian for the former Harold J. Patten Public Library and for the Tewksbury School Department Lunch Program.
Gladys was a member of the Tewksbury Congregational Church for 73 years, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and Friendly Guild.
In addition, she was a former member of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club and Senior Drop-In-Center.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Mark Bernat and his wife Ellen of Amherst, NH and Kim Moore and her partner David Brooks of Waterboro, ME; five great grandchildren, Peter Russo and his wife Sherri, Jillian and Tyler Bernat, Daniel and Brian Moore; three great great grandchildren, Juliana and Audrey Russo and Julien Bernat; two nieces, Judy Kennaugh of CO and Jean Fritter of NC; one grandniece, Julie Jeperson of CO; also many good friends including Louise Gearty of Tewksbury.
Gladys was the mother of the late Lawrence Collins and Carole McCormack, grandmother of the late Austin McCormack and sister of the late Vera Bolton.
Calling hours Tuesday, May 31, from 5-7 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 1, at 10 a.m., in the Tewksbury Congregational Church, East St., Tewksbury Center. Interment to follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
