Virgil Spicer, 86, of Irwin County died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M., Friday, May 27, 2011 at Frank Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Edward McIntyre and Elder Chad O’Quinn officiating. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Irwin County. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Thursday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Spicer was born September 9, 1924 in Irwin County to the late Marion Jackson Spicer, Sr. and Ella Tucker Spicer. He was a graduate of Ocilla High School. As a young man, Mr. Spicer served his country during World War II by working in the shipyards in Brunswick as well as Jacksonville, Florida. He began a long career in the potato chip business working with Tom’s Foods and later owned the local franchise for Gordon’s and Wise Snacks. Following retirement, Mr. Spicer worked with Michael Chevrolet as a car transporter. He was a former resident of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years: Zelda Spicer of Irwin County; grandson: Brian Spicer of Atlanta; granddaughter: Ava (Tim) Montgomery of Murfreesboro, TN; great-grandsons: Tyler and Paul Montgomery; daughter-in-law: Linda (Charlie) Gray of Hilton Head, SC; sister: Betty (Edward) McIntyre of Irwinville; sisters-in-law: Mattie Lou Snowden of Fitzgerald, Lucy Spicer of Jacksonville, FL, Latrelle Grantham of Mt. Dora, FL, and Edna Underwood of Athens; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Allen Spicer; grandson: Brent Spicer; two brothers: J.C. Spicer and Marion J. Spicer, Jr.; and two sisters: Louise Grantham and Mary Ethel Long.
