Virginia Dorothea Hamlett Clifton, 87 years of age, formerly of Holbrook Ave., passed away at Riverside Health and Rehab Center on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.
Mrs. Clifton was born October 24, 1923 in Danville, VA, the daughter of the late Emma DeHart Hamlett and Weldon W. Hamlett. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Weldon W. Hamlett, Jr., David Allen Hamlett, Giles Lee Hamlett, and Jasper Clifton Hamlett, and one sister, Alice Dean Hamlett.
Mrs. Clifton leaves one brother: Warner H. Hamlett and his wife Estelle of Danville; two sisters: Emma Hamlett Pillow of Danville and Jean Hamlett Glass of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. In addition, she leaves a son: Stephen Clifton and his wife Margie Clifton, and three grandchildren: Thomas, Rebecca, and Christine Clifton, all of Hicksville, New York; a large number of nieces and nephews.
As a young woman, Virginia moved to New York City where she lived for a number of years. While there, she worked as a telephone operator. Upon returning to Danville, Mrs. Clifton worked as a store clerk and a sitter.
Virginia had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor, always ready to come back with a clever response.
Visitation will take place from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. just prior to the 11:00 a.m. service on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. The services will be officiated by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. Interment will follow at the Hamlett Family Cemetery on Holland Road.
A special “thank you” is extended to the wonderful staff at Riverside Health and Rehab of Danville who loved “Aunt Virginia” and filled her final years with comfort and care.
