Mary Rita (Mahoney) Lowndes age 93 of Seaford, New York formerly of Brockton died Sunday May 15, 2011 following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late William H. Lowndes. Rita was born in Brockton the daughter of the late Jeremiah J. and Nora A. (Cronin) Mahoney and lived in Brockton for over 80 years before moving to Long Island to make her home with her daughter. Following her graduation from St. Patrick High School in 1936, she became a long distance operator at New England Telephone until her marriage. When her children were grown she worked for 17 years at the Veterans Services office in Brockton City Hall.
Rita was a founding member of the Brockton Mothers’ Club and member of the Catholic Choristers. She bowled with the Brockton senior league and enjoyed music, dancing and bingo. She traveled throughout Europe with her daughter and enjoyed reading about all the places she had visited.
Rita was the beloved mother of Noreen Nackenson and her husband Jody of Seaford, New York and Paul Lowndes and his wife Diane of Bourne. She leaves her cherished grandchildren Matthew Sohm and his wife Jennifer and Julia Nackenson and great grandchildren Dylan and Emily Sohm all of Seaford, New York. Rita is also survived by her sister-in-law Corrine Mahoney of Brockton and six nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved brothers Joseph Mahoney, Rev. John P. Mahoney, Daniel “Fred” Mahoney and James Mahoney.
Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Thursday May 19, 2011 8:30–10:30 am. Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church at 11 am.
