Obituary

Mr. Clyde Ray Saunders, a resident of Roman Eagle since July 29, 2005, died on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in Roman Eagle.

Mr. Saunders was born on February 2, 1928, the only child of the late Clyde Edward and Myrtle Harless Saunders. He was a graduate of Brosville High School and Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He also received a diploma from the Central Scientific School of Massage and Mechanotherapy.

Mr. Saunders served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the Air Force, he was employed for 38 years with Holiday Inns of America. He worked in Danville, Richmond, and New York City. He also worked as a massage therapist for a men’s health club. He lived at Holiday Village for 12 years before coming to Roman Eagle Memorial Home in 2005, where he spent his remaining years. He was a charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and a member of the Adelphia Sunday School Class.

The following have been a source of great comfort, help, and inspiration to Mr. Saunders, especially in the past few years of failing health: Earlene and Howard Dodson of Danville, VA, his cousin Dot Cookson and her husband William of Long Key, FL, the family of the late Edna Hedrick, Jeff and Debra Dodson of Danville, Wayne and Lauren Jefferson of Danville, Janet Gregory of Sutherlin, Zachery Gregory of Danville, and his cousin Emma Johnson and her husband Aaron of Gretna, VA.

Funeral services officiated by Rev. Bob Yeaman will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with interment following in Highland Burial Park. Graveside military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. – one hour prior to the service on Thursday, and at other times, at the home of Howard and Earlene Dodson, 175 Capri Court, Danville, VA 24541.

Mr. Saunders wished for his gratitude to be expressed to Roman Eagle for the many years of care and professional service provided him. He was especially grateful to the dedicated staff of North Wing who have been a great comfort to him over the years.
