"Auntie Gladys"

New Bedford – Gladys Lomas, affectionately known as “Auntie Gladys” by many, 94, of New Bedford passed away May 13, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Miss Lomas was born in New Bedford and was a lifelong resident of the city. She was daughter of the late Norrie Lomas of Romely, England and the late Christie Hannah (Marsh) Lomas Devaney and was the stepdaughter of the late Patrick James Devaney. A member of her beloved Grace Episcopal Church, she worked as a volunteer manager of their thrift store for 24 years. She was employed by the Wamsutta Mills, Continental Screw Company and lastly by the Acushnet Company Rubber Division until her retirement in 1981. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the former New Bedford Chapter #49, O.E.S. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and taking care of her family.

Survivors include 4 generations of nieces and nephews. She was sister of the late John Lomas, Herbert Devaney, Sr., James Devaney and Robert Devaney, Sr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend:

Visiting hours on Monday, May 16, 2011, 4:00-7:00 P.M. An Eastern Star service under the direction of Agawam Chapter #121 will be held at 6:30 P.M.

Funeral will be from the Kirby Funeral Home on Tuesday. May 17, 2011 at 8:30 A.M followed by a funeral Mass at Grace Episcopal Church, New Bedford at 10:00 A.M.

Interment in Acushnet Cemetery, Acushnet.
